I love when an event is held in an old mansion, castle or estate. It reminds me of the gilded era when society knew how to throw a splendid party. Im glad to share with you more of my favorite locations for your next splendid affair....

Gramercy Mansion
I have to admit that I'm very partial to this beautiful estate. I worked at the Tudor style mansion as an event host and had the pleasure of experiencing some of the most beautiful weddings and events held there. Built in 1902 by Alexander Cassatt owner of the Pennsylvania Railroad as a wedding gift for his daugther Eliza, it is now a bed & breakfast and event venue that host weddings and business conference. Cloisters Castle

To continue with my homage of possible wedding venues, I decide to post the wedding venue from Chelsea Clinton's wedding. Astor Courts Estate is about 50 acres and is located on the Hudson River in Rhinebeck, NY. Designed by Stanford White for the late John Jacob Astor IV in 1902 as a sporting pavilion, it houses 2 residential pools, 5 guest bedrooms, a central ballroom and tennis court. I believe it's a spectacular setting for a wedding and Chelsea Clinton thought so too. Take a look at this beautiful venue.

Choosing a venue for an event is one of my favorite things to do. As a Baltimorean I’m proud to share with you all the wonderful venues we have here in my home town. I decided this month to feature a few locations in Baltimore and the surrounding Maryland areas I think you should consider for your next event.
Let’s start with some historic venues...

Tremont Grand
I love the grandeur of this historic Mt .Vernon venue. Built in 1866 as the Grand Lodge of Maryland Masonic Temple, Tremont Grand has 19 ballroom choices that are unique and features magnificent marble and tile flooring, hand-carved wood designs and stained glass windows. This venue is perfect for any size event and the fact that it’s next door to the Tremont Plaza Hotel makes it an ideal choices from brides who would like to arrange hotel accommodation for their guests.

Home Weddings

I had a consultation today with a mom who is planning her daughter’s 2011 wedding at their family home. The idea of hosting a wedding from a family home is not new. Whether it is for financial or sentimental reasons it’s still important to understand the challenges of hosting your home wedding. Here are some of the challenges we discussed and that you should considered when planning a home wedding.

Location – honestly ask yourself do you have enough space to host your wedding at home. Consider the layout of the space for either an indoor/outdoor wedding and then asks yourself the following questions:

• Is the space spacious enough to handle a ceremony and reception?
• Are the grounds for the outdoor areas level enough for any tenting, tables or dancing areas?

• What about the inside of the home- what changes would be required to make it suitable for entertaining?

• Will you need to invest in additional landscaping? This will definitely affect a tight budget.

• Are there any rules and regulations through your Homeowners Association that my restrict some of your décor plans?

• What does the fire department say about the number of people that can safely attend your wedding? This not only includes your guests but the vendors hired to services the affair.

• How will you handle parking? Are your required to obtain permits?

• What will be your contingency plan if something goes wrong?

• What will your homeowner’s insurance cover in cases of property damage of any kind or stolen valuables?What if guests get hurt? What are your risks?

• Is the kitchen space equipped to handle your catering needs?

Cost- you still need to be realistic about your budget when planning a home wedding. You may find that the cost of hosting a wedding at home is far more expensive than you may have anticipated. Since you will have to rent most of your amenities it’s important to define you must haves from your wants. Here are some items that should be on your list:

• Catering – Talk with your caterer to determine that best style for your wedding. Should it be seated, buffet or cocktail?

• Music – Consider band or DJ and make sure you know what the noise ordinance is for your residential area.

• Table and Chairs - are very necessary but what will add to the cost is the style or design of the table and chairs.

• Tents – if you are having an outdoor wedding it’s important to rent a tent most standard tents are affordable, but there are various styles that may cause you to go over your budget.

• Bathrooms – depending on how large your home is bathrooms may not be an issue however most people do not want too much traffic in the private areas of their homes and will consider renting bathrooms. Today’s bathroom rentals can be very elaborate and can add to the cost of the budget.

Additional Challenges

• Do you have sufficient electrical outlets and can your house handle the equipment used by the different vendors?

• Are you serving alcohol and do you need a permit?

• What is your design scheme? Will you need to rent lighting, plants etc...

• Who will oversee the day to make sure everything run smoothly?

These are just a few things to consider when planning your home wedding. Consult with a planning professional for any additional assistance you may need. Happy Planning !

Bridal Showcase Weekend

After a week of delays from the impact of the biggest snow storm Baltimore has seen in years. Easterling Events was able to regroup and attend the rescheduled Baltimore Bridal Show held at the Baltimore Convention Center. Our theme this year was 'Modern Elegance'. I've always had a love of mirrors and thought that it would be awesome to incorporate it into our table design. Our goal was to design an elegant table that was modern in style, yet had the romances and splendor that most brides would want for their wedding reception. Instead of the traditional round table we used a square, which I absolutely love. I hope you love it as much as we did!

Glassybaby, founded by cancer survivor Lee Rhodes, has a goodwill program that every year, designates a select group of colors to benefit organizations contributing to cancer patient care and cancer research. Starting A Budget

I spoke with a bride today who is having a problem creating her wedding budget. Her fear is setting her budget to low or overspending. Like most couples their concern is to be able to pay their living expenses long after the wedding. As a planner I truly understand their concerns, however creating a budget is not an exact science, but there are things you should consider that will make settling on an amount much easier.

My advices to them and to you are as follows:

1. Sit down as a couple and define the type and style of wedding you want. Do you want a simple cocktail reception or seated dinner? Do you have a venue in mind? Do you have a theme in mind? What about the number of guests?

2. Review your current financial situation and personal budget and decide on an amount that is AFFORDABLE to you. Know your limits! You may only be able to afford $6,000 and that’s ok, however you need to be realistic and flexible. You may found out you can’t always get what you want, but most vendors are willing to work with you and offer an alternative solution.

3. Keep an account of your spending. The best way to track spending is to open a dedicated bank account for your wedding expenses. If family or friends are helping you pay for the wedding collect the money upfront and deposit it right away. Remember you cannot plan a wedding on a promissory note.

4. Define your must haves for your wedding? Open Bar vs. just wine or juice. DJ/Band vs. iPod station. Knowing you must haves will help you focus on the things that matters and stay away from things that don’t.

That said don’t be afraid to hire a planner. Their job is to help you stay within your budget and connect you with vendors that are willing to work you.

I love the new spring 2010 color palettes by Pantone. It’s the report I refer to when looking for inspiration in designing my client’s events. Now brides can be inspired by Pantone. Pantone has partnered with The Dessy Group to create Pantone Weddings, which is an online resource that brides can use to order color swatches and create design style boards to communicate their color choices effectively with their vendors and wedding party. DC ISES Expo iDEA 2009

I had the pleasure of volunteering for the Washington DC ISES annual expo this week at the North Bethesda Marriott. The expo's theme was the celebration of International iDEA. Four Multiple Vendor Design Centers and over 100 vendors showcased their unique international ideas. Two educational workshops titled The Anatomy of an Award-winning Event and West Coast to East Coast Trends kicked off the event.

Our day started with the set-up of the main ballroom beginning with marking vendor booth locations and lighting set-up. Outlining the foundation of the event is the most important part of the design. What a beautiful room!

The vendors of the Café Paris, Design Center #1 are pictured here putting together the final touches to their center space. Expo attendees were able to drink champagne, relax and taste awesome French inspired delicacies.

Another Awesome Design Center was titled "The Road to Cairo". The designer and vendors of this booth really did an excellent job with the layout and decor selections.

What can I say! Party Rentals LTD just took my breath way. I always wanted to use mirror as a table topper and I have to say I was impress with their design. It stole the show for me.

This year's expo was awesome and I can't wait to attend next year's event. I also have to thanks my friend Yang Jiang a gifted photographer who also volunteered for the expo and took these fabulous pictures on my post.

Venue News: Hotel Monaco Baltimore

I’m excited about the new luxury hotel and event venue Hotel Monaco Baltimore, a Kimpton Hotel. This venue is situated at the former B&O Railroad headquarters located at 2 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21201.

I had the opportunity to visit the venue along with other event and wedding planners in the area and I must say it was absolutely stunning. Wine Tastings are fun educational ways to learn about wines. I encourage my client’s to attend a wine tasting with a Sommelier. I usually coordinate the food and the wine tasting together, so that my client can evaluate their choices more efficiently. I feel it’s important to know exactly what your guests will be eating or drinking during your reception. If it doesn’t appeal to you then why serve it? A good Sommelier will be able to create a wine list that will compliment your food choices, your taste and your budget.

For wine aficionados I suggest hosting a wine tasting party. It’s an excellent way to share your love of wine with family and friends.

Trisha works as a nurse for a local hospital and Frank is one of Baltimore's Finest police officers. I’m so excited to feature the wedding of Natalia and Kristopher, which took place at a historical mansion in Catonsville, MD. I was hired by Natalia and her mom Maria to coordinate this very elegant and beautiful affair, in which Natalia was able to infuse some of her Colombian heritage. During this wonderful fun filled wedding, guests were about to drink Colombian soda, dance to Colombian music and sample homemade cupcakes created from a family recipe. Although, it rained and we had to move the ceremony inside the mansion, everything came together beautifully.

A Greener Company

Easterling Events has decided to join the “Green Movement”. We are starting small by using recycled and remanufactured office supplies and have even set-up a recycled program for our office. In our office and homes we are also using certified green products for cleaning and will continue to educate ourselves on practices that will allow us to conserve natural resources and prevent environmental pollution.

Will what can I say, this was by far one of the most memorable weddings of 2008. Lauren and Jonathan's wedding was held in Southern Maryland at Herrington on the Bay on May 31,2008. The weather was very unpredicatable that day. It started off very hot and sunny, then 2 hours before the wedding it rained with strong winds and hail. After the storm passed we had less than 45 minutes to set-up the outdoor ceremony. Happily everything turned out perfectly.
